Taking the risk of knowing yourself and creating the life you want.

“There is the risk you cannot afford to take, there is the risk you cannot afford not to take.”  Peter Drucker

Can we take the risk of not knowing ourselves? When we do not know ourselves well enough, we are led to act and react rather automatically. In that case, our behaviours, our actions, our thoughts and our decisions are mainly influenced by the way we have been shaped or conditioned by our parents, our teachers and the society we originate from. We act and think in a way that seems appropriate to us because this is what we have learned; we do not know how to do otherwise. We do not always realize that the means we use to address our lives’ problems are ineffective in the current context in which we now operate.

Personal development is an investment in oneself. It allows us to turn on the light within us. It confronts us to our thoughts, our emotions and our bodily sensations, if we are ready to observe them in different situations of our lives, without judgment. We sometimes discover a restlessness that hides within us, the presence of which we were not aware of. We may be confronted with a grief that we had neglected to feel and care for. We may also discover the beauty of our being, this beauty that we had been reluctant to acknowledge.

Self-awareness helps us to journey through life while experiencing greater inner peace because we finally understand what really matters to us and what we value. We are then inclined to invest our efforts in the direction of what motivates us most deeply. Self-knowledge is transformative and leads us towards greater autonomy.

“Through training, we can change; we can transform ourselves.”  Dalai Lama
